In the majestic mountains of Washington is the charming Bavarian themed town of Leavenworth. A town that, over time, has transformed itself from dying logging town to one of the most visited locations in Washington.

I have been coming back off and on since my family moved to Washington back in 1966. And, what a change this town has gone through.

Is it a bit touristy? Not doubt. Maybe even schmaltzy? Ok. But it is also, fun and romantic, and very active for those that want to be. In short, you won't be disappointed making the short trip to visit.

Hotels and B and B's in Romantic Leavenworth

Romantic Leavenworth Hotels

Hotel Pension Anna

Are you looking for an authentic Alpine lodging experience, without that need to travel all the way to Europe to get it? Then Hotel Pension Anna just might be what you are looking for. This small boutique hotel offers up 17 scrumptious rooms and hearty breakfast is included. Hotel~Pension Anna is the perfect base for your weekend or week-long getaway.

Mountain Home Lodge

Only accessible by snow coach in the winter, (transport provided) the Mountain Home Lodge is a luxurious and relaxing getaway from it all as it is located high above the town of Leavenworth in the middle of a large pasture with the Stuart Range just outside your door. This is one place that will have you relaxed and restored in no time. Great peaceful setting, superb accommodations, and haute cuisine. Who could ask for anything more?

Bavarian Lodge

For those wanting to be in the middle of things without the commotion that sometimes accompanies a central location, the Bavarian Lodge is perfect. Right across the street from town center, you have easy access to everything and, with one of the top floors, a great view of the town. During the holiday season this is a must. The hotel is, like most places in town, done in a Bavarian theme that is quite authentic. A great place to stay with a great staff willing to help.

Romantic Leavenworth Bed and Breakfasts

All Seasons River Inn

The All Seasons River Inn is one of our favorite places to stay in romantic Leavenworth. It is a luxuriously blissful experience on the sitting on the banks of the Wenatchee River. (As we often like to bring our dog, we, unfortunately, can't always stay here.) Rates at All Seasons River Inn, 8751 Icicle Road, range from $165 to $230, which includes a full breakfast. The six comfy suites have gas fireplaces and decks that overlook the Wenatchee River. Five of the six suites have oversize jetted whirlpool tubs.

Abendblume

If you are a fan of all things Bavarian, as I am, you are going to love Abendblume, as we do. There are few places so authentically Bavarian. The inn is located a bit off the beaten path, so if you are looking to be right in the thick of things, this may not be for you. Abendblume has been voted "Leavenworth's Finest Lodging." Here you will be surrounded with romance and luxury inspired by fine European country inns. Enjoy the spas, fireplaces and full breakfast. Once again this all adult, no pets, and smoke-free environment.

Run of the River

There is absolutely no question that this is one of the finest bed and breakfast inns in the country, not just here in Leavenworth. Rustic, masculine, yes. But, also warm inviting and cozy. Run of the River Inn serves a a fresh and hearty five course Gourmet Breakfast each morning that is simply superb. Imagine a falling into a huge beautiful, extremely comfortable king bed, or lazing by a large stone fireplace, or maybe soaking in a double jacuzzi. Run of the River is exquisite.

Things to See and Do in Leavenworth

Of course, the town itself is the main attraction for many folks, including my family and I, especially as the Christmas holidays approach. This is surely the busiest time of year, and requires reservations many months in advance. But, there is more to this area than this transported Bavarian village.

Things to Do by Season

Seasonal Festivals

Christmas Tree Lighting Festival

This really draws the crowds! So plan ahead. Typically planned for the three weekends leading up to Christmas, the tree lighting events are very popular and draw throngs of people for the festivities. The usual timing for events are:

FRIDAYS

Lights Are On!
St. Nicholas Greets
Children With Fruit
and Song

SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS

Roasting Chestnuts, Characters,
Live Entertainment All Day!
Lighting Ceremony Begins at 4:45

Maifest

The traditional Bavarian celebration of the arrival of Spring. You'll find folk dancers twirling and dancing in front of and around the Maibaum (May Pole) in Front Street right in the center of Leavenworth. Towns people will be dressed in traditional costumes. Come and capture all the color and fun of Maifest.

Oktoberfest

This wouldn't be a Bavarian town if Oktoberfest wasn't celebrated, now would it. Though the real Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany actually starts in September, we won't let a small thing like that spoil the fun, will we?

This is a big deal in here in romantic Leavenworth, what once started out modestly is now a big time affair. In 2011, about 40,000 people took part in the celebrations. Be aware that due to the festivals popularity, you must make reservations at hotels and bed and breakfasts well in advance. Some hotels are booked a year in advance, so planning is essential.

Other festivals that occur throughout the year, include:

  • Bavarian Ice Festival in January
  • Red Wine and Chocolate Festival in February
  • Leavenworth Ale Fest in April
  • Great Leavenworth Wine & Food Festival in June

and many other, smaller ones. No wonder romantic Leavenworth is called the festival capital of the Northwest.

Winter

Alpine Skiing

With a little drive, to either Mission Ridge or Stevens Pass, you are in some great ski country. Stevens even has a shuttle to take you there and back. There is even a small slope in Leavenworth with one lift and two rope tows. Great for the family.

Backcountry Skiing

If your skiing interests lie a bit farther off the beaten path, then, maybe, back country skiing is what you are looking for. You can find that here too. Northwest Mountain School has been guiding for many years together to out of the way locations.

Dog Sledding

I'm willing to bet that most of us have never even thought of this, but you should. It's a blast. There are three different outfits that offer this very cool activity.

Spring, Summer, and Fall

Climbing

Romantic Leavenworth is also a well known destination for rock climbing. In fact, Rock and Ice Magazine chose Leavenworth as one of the top 10 climbing cities in the U.S. Only a short distance away is the Pinnacles. A state park that gives climbers multi-pitch challenges, as well as spectacular views of the surrounding orchards and Cascade Mountain Range.
